One person's balm is another's felony; San Francisco's D.A., Calif. attorney general in standoff over marijuana crackdown

Article Abstract:

A controversy regarding the closure of the downtown San Francisco Cannabis Buyers Club rages between conservative California Attorney General Dan Lungren and liberal San Francisco District Attorney Terrence Hallinan. The Club was founded in 1994 to provide cannabis for medicinal purposes in a city in which, according to estimates, one in 25 people suffered from AIDS. Cannabis has proved useful in decreasing the wasting and nausea of end-stage AIDS. Lungren felt that the club was used by regular junkies. A hearing on the club's closure will take place on Aug 30. 1996.
