Paying student loans and still having a life; a sudden rush of income can become a gilded cage, so handle it sensibly

Article Abstract:

Many new attorneys feel they must take a high-paying job even if they do not like the work, in order to pay off student debts now typically between $40,000 and $80,000. Those who do take such work often make up for their unhappiness by using their left-over money to buy material goods, rather than saving it for future independence or paying down student loans more quickly. Sound planning can help, and there are loan forgiveness programs to help lawyers who take public-interest or other low-paying initial jobs.

The deathless practice of law

Article Abstract:

The ABA condones the tradition of leaving partners' names in a law firm name long after they are dead, but this practice can lead to confusion and deceit and has little theoretical justification. The name should contain three or four of the senior partners and if one retired or died, customers would know immediatelyh because of the firm's change of name. Using trade names for law firms can deceive the public in the way that using deceased partners' names can.

All shook up at Shook Hardy; associates gripe at expanding Midwest tobacco defense firm

Article Abstract:

The Missouri firm of Shook, Hardy and Bacon is in the midst of an associate pay dispute, with young lawyers unhappy with the firm for not matching annual raises announced by other Kansas City, MO law firms. Senior partners insist the firm's compensation is very competitive, considering benefits and senior associate pay, and that the retention rate and chances of making partner measure up to national standards.
