E.U. extends its privacy protection; directive aims to stop the sharing of personal data

Article Abstract:

The European Union Personal Data Protection Directive, to take effect in late 1999, is designed to harmonize the privacy laws of EU members and bars the transfer of data between an EU and non-EU country without adequate safeguards. US companies doing business in Europe which do not comply with the directive face being barred from transfering information from Europe and maybe even from business in EU countries.

Low-profile feds fashion laws to fight cybercrime; but they are shunned by companies wanting to conceal flaws in security

Article Abstract:

The Department of Justice established its Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section in 1996 to investigate and prosecute computer-related crime. The biggest challenge of computer law enforcement is an under-reporting of computer security offenses, with few businesses wanting to admit to the vulnerability of their systems, especially those in the high-technology sector.
