Fen-phenomenal tort battle brewing: lawyers split over need for a class action against makers of diet drugs

Article Abstract:

Lawyers disagree on the best way to handle the Fen-phen diet drug litigation. Both drugs were removed from the market on Sept 15, 1997, after reports of heart valve abnormalities in 32% of users. As of mid-Nov, more than 24 state class action and three nationwide ones had been filed. Plaintiffs' lawyers state the recall of the drug could lead to one of the largest mass tort battles ever, but disagree on whether class action or case-by-case litigation is the way to go.

The legal world according to AARP: lawyers joining retiree discount program must undergo screening, pay fee

Article Abstract:

The American Assn of Retired Persons (AARP) started a pilot program offering a new benefit, discount legal services, to members in parts of four states. The benefit offers 30 min of free legal advice, 20% off a participating lawyer's standard fees and certain services at a fixed rate. Many big employers offer such a benefit, but the AARP program may dwarf the others as the organization has so many members.
