Rebellious grand jurors hire lawyer; twelve who heard Rocky Flats evidence want to criticize plea, avoid charges

Article Abstract:

Grand jurors unhappy about a plea bargain with Rockwell International Corp for environmental offenses at the Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant are voicing their dissent in various ways. After federal district Judge Sherman Finesilver refused to release a report of their findings and requested a Justice Department investigation into possible violations of the grand jurors' secrecy oaths, the 12 grand jurors wrote to President Clinton in protest. They have also retained Jonathan Turley of George Washington University's Environmental Crimes Project to help them.

Judge forced off tobacco suit; 3rd Circuit orders case reassigned because opinion showed bias

Article Abstract:

Judge H. Lee Sarokin was removed from Haines v Liggett Group in Sep 1992. This is a products liability case against the tobacco industry which Sarokin had been involved with for eight years. The judge's ouster came because of an opinion he wrote during discovery proceedings which appeared prejudiced against the cigarette industry. Sarokin recused himself from Cipollone v Liggett Group Inc shortly after the 3rd Circuit removed him from the Haines case. The tobacco industry had been trying to effect Sarokin's ouster through motions for five years.

Overwhelming evidence sinks Gotti; experts say court's forced ouster of brash defense counsel did no harm

Article Abstract:

Most observers are confident that the disqualification of lawyer Bruce Cutler before John Gotti's fourth trial was not the reason Gotti lost. The consensus is that Gotti's words and the evidence of his former underboss Salvatore Gravano enabled the prosecution to win a racketeering and murder conviction. Although the case will probably be appealed because of denial of Gotti's right to counsel, most observers feel that Cutler's replacement by Albert Krieger did not play a part in Gotti's conviction.
