Religious Conservatives Bully Textbook Publishers

Article Abstract:

Anti-evolution groups have been unsuccessful in passing anti-evolutionist legislation. They have also been unable to win any important court cases for their cause. Where anti-evolution groups have succeeded is in biology textbook publishing. They have managed to intimidate biology textbook publishers into imposing self-censorship concerning evolution. The publishing industry must resist the anti-evolution groups' pressure, or there will be more imposed and self-censorship. Publishers face economic loss, by not accommodating the desires of the textbook selection committee.

Article Abstract:

The need for tort reform is evidenced by the number of product liability cases for which punitive damages awarded by a jury are excessive and usually reduced on appeal. A recent Supreme Court ruling on the issue is lauded as a sign, but closer examination reveals the ruling to have minimal effect.
