Risky business; as more solos join the ranks, the margin for error grows increasingly slim

Article Abstract:

Technology, demographic trends and lifestyle preferences can be reasons for lawyers to try to make it as sole practitioners. The fact that we live in an age of layoffs and one in which, at times, only graduates of famous law schools can obtain jobs with major, big-city firms may also play a part. Several young attorneys who made the move identify big decisions, unexpected expenses, and how much cash would be necessary for someone making the move today. Keep expenses to a minimum until the cash flow is consistent.

Married ... with clients: working with a spouse takes effort, but results in greater rewards

Article Abstract:

Rodd Hamman and Robin Wolff combine marriage with a joint law practice in Billings, MT, but not every lawyer couple can replicate their success. A high degree of professionalism is needed in the office to reassure clients and avoid emotional conflicts. A family practice can offer clients the personalized service many want, and Wolff and Hamman say they have no tension over division of income and enjoy being able to fully discuss cases outside the office. Illness is another potential pitfall.
