Roundtable discussion with enforcement officials

Article Abstract:

Antitrust law enforcement chiefs and practitioners met to discuss issues that included state antitrust enforcement, the Microsoft case, interagency cooperation and proposed legislation. Dept of Justice Antitrust Division Assistant Attorney General Anne K. Bingaman reviewed administrative reforms occurring in the Antitrust Division. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chair Robert Pitofsky presented his vision for the FTC's role in enforcement. National Ass'n of Attorneys General Multistate Antitrust Task Force Chair Laurel A. Price commented on state merger guidelines and budgetary limits.

Roundtable conference with enforcement officials

Article Abstract:

Officials with the Federal Trade Commission, the Antitrust Division and the Multistate Antitrust Task Force responded to the questions of antitrust practitioners and identified the enforcement priorities at their respective agencies. They emphasized the importance of cooperation among state and federal agencies and of trying to balance civil, criminal and merger enforcement efforts. Practitioners raised questions about coordination of guidelines and litigation expenses.

Article Abstract:

A discussion among antitrust law enforcement officials and government regulators on current US antitrust enforcement policy is presented. Issues discussed include state cases against the tobacco industry, US Justice Department price-fixing cases, FTC's settlement of the Intel monopoly case, and intellectual property as monopoly power.
