Rules to talk by; law profs propose an ethics code for lawyer commentators

Article Abstract:

Law review articles by Professors Erwin Chemerinsky and Laurie Levenson propose a voluntary code of ethics for legal commentators. Problems with the breed became apparent with the saturation television coverage of certain high-profile trials such as O.J. Simpson's. Many of the specific provisions they propose are standard in most ethical codes, such as honoring promises of confidentiality and disclosing or eliminating conflicts of interest. Other provisions such as having commentators avoid predictions and make only neutral comments are more controversial.

Getting out the word; legal consumer group wants lawyers to distribute client bill of rights

Article Abstract:

HALT, AN Organization of Americans for Legal Reform, is a 20-year-old group advocating rules requiring lawyers to provide clients with a written explanation of their rights when talking to a lawyer. The group has drafted a Legal Consumer Bill of Rights telling clients their rights include monthly case-status reports, reasonable fees and prompt replies to phone calls. Several states have been experimenting with the concept before HALT's efforts.
