Senate bans most 'Net gambling; many bet on poor enforcement

Article Abstract:

The Internet boasts gambling which is virtually unregulated and the most frenzied in the US. Lawyers thriving in 'Net businesses; they combine legal know-how with technical savvy

Article Abstract:

An Internet innovation is its use by attorneys to start legal-technology businesses of their own. The Web sites organize the data in ways colleagues can use in their work without specialized software. The pioneer in the field, Lexis, was started in 1965 by James F Preston Jr, then president of the Ohio State Bar. Many legal Internet tools start with state and federal case law and codes and extend to expert data bases, prior evidence, litigation histories and lawsuit materials.

$30 billion MCI bid has antitrust world spinning; emerging world networks push the limits of antitrust enforcement paradigms

Article Abstract:

WorldCom Inc may control between 50 and 60% of the telecommunications industry's Internet backbone if its Oct 1, 1997 merger with MCI Communications Corp passes Department of Justice muster. The main Internet arteries receiving smaller sources of data make up this backbone, with MCI and UUNET Technologies Inc the two largest US backbone providers. The increasing demands of Internet consumers could increase backbone-access prices.
