Sharing the gains at Rank Xerox

Article Abstract:

Rank Xerox introduced a gainsharing scheme in its Mitchel-dean manufacturing plant in January 1995 to improve employee efficiency, encourage a team environment and to position itself as a leader in customer satisfaction. The scheme which covers all the business centers at the site includes all employees and is based on a the principle of adding value. When performance is better than a predetermined standard, employees and the company share the profit 50:50. Among the disadvantages of the scheme are a difficulty in defining productivity improvements and in linking pay and performance.

Wide pay variations emerging

Article Abstract:

With nearly 90% of all UK pay reviews to be completed by the close of July 1995, median annual pay awards remain at 3%, where they have held since Nov 1994, despite the rise of headline inflation to 3.5%. Only a quarter of settlements have exceeded the inflation level, though the chemicals and engineering sectors have averaged pay raises of 3.5% and those in finance are at 3.9%. Public-sector raises have lagged, averaging 2.5%. Continuing 3.5% inflation will probably reassert the traditional UK inflation-plus pattern of pay settlements.

Spectacular growth in PRP continues

Article Abstract:

The number of private sector employees in the UK covered by profit-related pay (PRP) schemes has increased to one in eight, growing by a factor of seven between 1990 and Sep 1994, when a total of 7,773 schemes had been registered. PRP offers a way of providing employees with tax-free income that is linked to company profitability. PRP plans at Welsh Water and Swallow Hotels are examined as case studies, and other recently-instituted PRP schemes are also discussed.
