Shopper's guide to time and billing software

Article Abstract:

Time and billing software has become vital to the operations and management of large and small law firms. A good program should accomplish the following: record time, expenses and payments involving a legal matter; create client billing statements; have a capability to monitor and age accounts receivable; and provide sufficient information to accommodate analyses of productivity and profitability. Enhancements and new features in seven major time-and-billing products are examined in detail.

An overview of estate planning software

Article Abstract:

More estate-planning software products are available than products having to do with any other area of the law. Estate-planning programs usually fall into one of three types: marketing programs for helping lawyers market their practices; programs for document drafting and estate administration; and programs for dealing with estate taxes and related matters. How to shop for estate-planning products is discussed, whether an integrated system or specialty module is needed.

Tax resources galore!

Article Abstract:

Research Institute of America's (RIA) loose-leaf service, which gathers a huge range of resources together, is now available over the Internet (http://Checkpoint.riag.com). The service, called Checkpoint, has an easy-to-use interface, providing access to tax news, cases and rulings, state and federal documents, treatises, and RIA's analysis. Checkpoint is, however, extremely expensive, typically costing $15,000 to $18,000 per year.
