Adios, outside auditors; insurance carriers go in-house to check attorneys' bills

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the trend among insurance companies to audit attorneys' bills by themselves rather than hiring outside auditors to do so are discussed. The trend has evolved since the early 1990s and many of the insurance defense bar were understandably miffed.

Shopping to bag a practice; model rule says goodwill can be sold, but most solos prefer partnership transfers

Article Abstract:

Most sole practitioners find partnership transfers the preferred method when selling their practices. Almost half the states have adopted the 1990 ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, which permit sole practitioners to sell their practices outright, but the large-scale sale of practices in these jurisdictions has not materialized. Moreover, the pertinent ABA rule has the advantage of permitting a price including the factoring in of goodwill

Reeling in the corporate client; a specialty, along with great marketing, can get you into the boardroom

Article Abstract:

The article discusses new ways of soliciting corporate clients ranging from taking potential clients out for a coffee break and making a marketing pitch there to advertising on the Internet and dispensing free legal advice to entrepreneurs in Internet chat rooms. Sole practitioners have traditionally had more trouble attracting corporate clients but can still do so with innovative marketing.
