Sovereignty, self-determination, and environmental justice in the Mescalero Apache's decision to store nuclear waste

Article Abstract:

An environmental justice approach incorporating environmental education is key to preserving tribal self-determination in the decision to locate a potentially very dangerous nuclear waste site in the middle of a Mescalero Apache reservation. In view of the federal interest in staying out of this process and the probable preemption of state power, the Mescalero Apaches will probably have full authority to decide. Before the plant is built, the trible should have the benefit of full environmental education as to its possible dangers.
