Squeeze play; as accountants edge into the legal market, lawyers may find themselves not only blindsided by the assault but also limited by professional rules

Article Abstract:

A relaxed regulatory atmosphere in Washington has allowed accounting firms to expand to all kinds of law practice, either by themselves or through affiliated firms. The large accounting firms have even gone beyond tax law and into into various other commercial services. This began in the early 1980s, when due to Congress's simplification of the Internal Revenue Code the income tax preparation market started to flatten and accounting firms looked for new sources of income. Law firms are very worried about this trend.

Fugitive or refugee? 41 states seek cert after New Mexico's top court refuses to extradite self-proclaimed activist in Ohio

Article Abstract:

The New Mexico Supreme Court denied Ohio's extradition request for parole violater Timothy Reed, upsetting decades of routine extradition procedures among states. The New Mexico court stated the defendant, who was an Indian rights activist in Ohio faced the threat of death or great bodily injury if returned to Ohio. Critics indicated the New Mexico court's conduct was disrespectful to the competency of the Ohio legal system and the US Supreme Court's well-developed extradition standards.
