Standing up for women: commission hears testimony for a new report on gender bias in profession

Article Abstract:

Witnesses appearing before the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession at the midyear meeting in Feb describe continuing gender-related problems. Income disparities, the subtler forms of gender bias in promotion to top positions, and reluctance to accept flexible work schedules persist, and are still worse for women of color. Some men have evinced a sentiment that women have reached parity, but statistics argue otherwise, and without full equality in the ABA it is difficult to argue for it elsewhere. The full report is due in Aug.

LPM gives nonlawyers a break; Section seeks to improve service by letting lawful providers tap resources

Article Abstract:

The ABA Section of Law Practice Management realizes that some nonlawyers have taken to providing legal services and aims to help them as well. Services nonlawyers have been taking on include property closings and form preparations. The section's willingness to help nonlawyers stands in contract to the ABA's General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section which opposes nonlawyers providing legal services.

Professionalism tops Shestack agenda: diversity, LSC, other issues promise to crowd the presidential plate, too

Article Abstract:

ABA President Jerome J. Shestack is focused on enhancing attorney professionalism and ethical conduct. He feels the important issues facing the ABA are: too little diversity in law schools, removal of welfare benefits to disabled children, attorneys' relationships with the media, Legal Services Corp. funding and maintaining the judiciary's independence.
