Starr inquiry, Paula Jones suit collide

Article Abstract:

The Paula Jones sexual harassment action and the alleged subornation of perjury and obstruction of justice in the Monica Lewinsky matter represent a confluence of civil and criminal charges. Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr has the problem with the criminal charges that he needs very persuasive, independent, circumstantial evidence to support them. Who is alleged to have committed the perjury is an aggravating factor. Monica Lewinsky may have a claim to pressure from high places, so she is a difficult target for prosecution.

Clinton will ask judge to throw out Jones' case; if unsuccessful, his lawyers will seek fast resolution of her sex harassment lawsuit

Article Abstract:

Pres Bill Clinton has several plans to continue countering the sexual harassment action by Paula Jones, the first being a motion for summary judgment to be filed as early as Feb 9, 1998. Should Jones' suit survive summary judgment, Clinton's lawyer Robert Bennett has already asked that the late May 1998 trial date be moved up two months, seeking to benefit from a Supreme Court opinion refusing to postpone the case until after Clinton's presidency but advocating a speedy resolution.
