Straight talk; to Bush, Clinton and Perot: open the debate on justice

Article Abstract:

The presidential candidates should use some of their campaign time to discuss the problems in the US judicial system. Problems include underfunded and overcrowded court systems and prisons, loss of habeas corpus rights and legal assistance to the poor lagging behind need. Legal aid was a national priority in the 1970s but has fallen behind due to government spending cuts. The 1992 Los Angeles riots following the Rodney King verdict have highlighted the problem of racism in the judicial system.

Florida's new pro bono program; a bold step toward access to justice

Article Abstract:

The Florida Supreme Court has adopted a plan devised by the Florida Bar whereby each attorney should provide at least 20 hours of direct pro bono legal services annually or pay $350. Each time attorneys renew their bar association membership, they must report the number of pro bono hours performed or money contributed. These measures should move Florida towards the goal of full access to justice.

Seeking fairness in justice reform

Article Abstract:

Although Dan Quayle's plan for legal reform has some favorable aspects, is ignores the pressing legal needs of the poor. The ABA has studied the Competitiveness Council's report since Quayle's speech in Aug 1991. The plan does nothing to fund legal services for the poor and would limit punitive damage awards, although it does contain provisions for business and industry.
