Strength in networking: how the organized bar is gaining one solo at a time

Article Abstract:

The ABA's solo and small-firm committee is planning a model office project for sole practitioners and small firm lawyers to focus on management topics many of these lawyers want help with. The Sole Practitioner Small Law Firm Section of the Atlanta Bar Assn should serve as a model for other bar associations. Recognizing that most sole practitioners and small firm lawyers are specialists, the section set up a referral network which lawyers have found most helpful.

The secretarial advantage; law students, paralegal tasks, flexible hours are part of new approach

Article Abstract:

Sole practitioners and small firm attorneys know how crucial a good secretary is. Since the pool of legal secretaries seems to be shrinking due to the desire of many to use secretarial positions as a stepping-stone to other legal jobs, some lawyers have decided law students who can type make good secretary paralegals. With law students, the turnover happens at predictable times and law students are more than capable of paralegal work.

Room for compromise: to reap the benefits of office sharing, get details straight upfront

Article Abstract:

Sole practitioners can benefit from sharing office space, but they should carefully plan before entering these types of arrangements. Details regarding shared support staff, common areas, equipment, and shared income must be worked out in advance. Attorneys should strive to find compatible office mates, but be prepared to move if arrangements prove unworkable.
