Successful lawyers pay the price; many in the profession today work more, earn more, but enjoy it less

Article Abstract:

Successful lawyers today spend more time at their work and derive less satisfaction from it than in years past, in part because they sacrifice other uses for those extra hours. Many subtle pressures arising from success encourage devoting more time to the job, but it takes time as well to be a good spouse, parent, and member of the community. Hobbies are vital to remaining energized and alert to the world outside of the law. Scheduling is important, but total scheduling rules out responding to cries for help.
