The health care of women prisoners in England and Wales: a literature review

Article Abstract:

Health care aspects of women prisoners in England and Wales have never been coordinated and evaluated, so new research is needed. Studies indicate that women prisoners have a significantly higher rate of mental illness than their male counterparts, but more women prisoners have had psychiatric treatment prior to their imprisonment. Attention must be given to the adverse social environments from which these women are taken and where they will return.

De-institutionalisation, psychiatric treatment and mentally disordered offenders in Italy: some critical considerations

Article Abstract:

One of the latest innovations in psychiatric treatment of mentally ill criminals is called de-institutionalization. Italy has shown the most enthusiasm for this project of all countries in Western Europe, and this policy has been evaluated. While the number of patients treated by psychiatric facilities has lowered, criminal courts and prisons have treated more psychiatric subjects. this policy may put criminally insane subjects at risk.
