Television and the jury

Article Abstract:

Media coverage of a trial can potentially affect courtroom behavior and affect the outcome of the trial, so judges are right to exercise prudent control over its use. Most important, juries may act differently under the media spotlight, and are much likelier to end up sequestered, which affects how they operate. Witnesses may be more or less willing to testify before a camera. While many observers say media coverage makes the public hostile to lawyers, coverage of lawyers acting foolishly or obnoxiously is weightier.

French officials now face new crime charges

Article Abstract:

A new trend in French criminal law fastens criminal liability for misconduct threatening public health and safety on senior government officials and corporations as a way of deterring such misconduct. The indictment of former French prime minister Laurent Fabius and two of his colleagues for homicide and causing disabling illness stems from at least a thousand hemophiliacs receiving blood infected with the AIDS virus in 1985. The indictment is an example of the new legal trend.

Appeals route blocked for prisoners

Article Abstract:

The Prison Litigation Reform Act, part of the 1996 Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act, has made prisoner lawsuits more difficult, especially those filed by indigent prisoners. The lawsuit has long been the prisoner's only way of being heard and prisoners have often gone this route to retain their basic rights. No anecdotes about frivolous prisoner suits can hide this fact. Equal protection challenges will be filed against this law.
