Term limits for Senate thwart founders' plan

Article Abstract:

GOP members of the House of Representatives would best display the meaning of the term 'republican' if they passed an amendment limiting service in the House but not in the Senate. The Romans coined the word 'republican' to signifiy individual political participation through direct votes on Senate laws. Romans elected their senators for life, to encourage a long-term perspective, best reflected by the lack of term limits on the US Senate.

Keep 'junk' science off the stand

Article Abstract:

Stuart Speiser's opinion that the courts should admit as evidence science not generally recognized by the establishment fails to take into account the possible cost to consumers needlessly frightened by that evidence. It is possible to find an expert who will testify in favor of almost any theory. Jury acceptance of an unproven theory can lead to very large unjustified damages and consumers needlessly afraid of the effects of a product.

Peer review does not thwart new ideas

Article Abstract:

Stuart Speiser errs in depicting peer review as a very conservative influence in the scientific world. Science encourages and thrives on discovery, and peer review provides a necessary validating and refining element to the discovery process.
