A new dawn for London Zoo

Article Abstract:

The British recession of the 1980s and 1990s meant that the London Zoo faced difficult economic times. The British government gave the London Zoological Society (ZSL), of which the London Zoo is part, a one-time grant of 10 mil pounds to turn business around. During the recession, however, this was a difficult achievement. By 1992 the money had almost run out, but public outcry over a ZSL decision to close the zoo gave it time to prepare a business plan for the government. The plan focused on the zoo's importance to conservation, and the zoo was successful. Zoo funding comes from visitors and subscriptions, and it does not depend on any government subsidies.
