The U.N. Convention on International Bills and Notes (CIBN): a primer for attorneys and international bankers

Article Abstract:

The final draft of the United Nations Convention on International Bills of Exchange and International Promissory Notes was completed in 1988 and the new negotiable instrument the convention creates should standardize international cash and credit transactions, although its use would be optional. Multinational corporations, residents of a jurisdiction with dated negotiable instruments law who desire an option other than the domestic law of the other party, and creditors interested in paper with commercially attractive terms and enhanced secondary market resale potential might be interested.

The International Standby Practices (ISP98): new rules for standby letters of credit

Article Abstract:

This article present information on the new rules for standby letters of credit established by the International Standby Practices, which built on earlier work by the UN Convention on Independent Guarantees and Standby Letters of Credit, Revised UCC Article 5, and the revised OCC Interpretive Ruling. Relevant points include the international harmonization of rules relating to standby letters of credit as an unprecedented achievement in modern commercial law.
