The airline industry: labor relations in the era of deregulation, mergers, bankruptcies, and layoffs

Article Abstract:

At one time the airline industry had a record of continuous growth spanning several decades. It was assumed that business would keep improving and that a n airline career could be counted on for life. The 1980s and its fuel crises, deregulation, fare wars, mergers, strong global competition, war and international terrorism changed all of this. It is likely that the same forces that have reduced the North American picture to a handful of successful companies will do the same globally. Labor and management must form a partnership to meet the challenges ahead.

The Immigration Reform and Control Act's potential effects on remedies available to illegal aliens under the National Labor Relations Act: revisiting Sure-Tan v. National Labor Relations Board

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court ruled in 1984 in Sure-Tan v. National Labor Relations Board that illegal aliens had National Labor Relations Act protection, thereby trying to accomplish the goals of both the that act and the Immigration and Nationality Act. However, passage of the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act raised questions about the remedies available to illegal aliens under the Sure-Tan decision, questions the case law in the decade since the act has not yet answered. Some of the cases are discussed.
