The forgotten victims: new ABA domestic violence program reaches out to children

Article Abstract:

The ABA will start an education initiative called 'It's Not OK' to help prevent domestic violence. The initiative's centerpiece will be an 8-minute video for children 7-12 reassuring them that they are not the cause of domestic violence and that such violence is an unacceptable way to display anger. The video also suggests ways children can protect themselves and tells them going to court is an option. A 1994 report by the ABA Center on Children and the Law stated that 3 to 10 mil children see domestic violence in their homes each year.

Model ethics rules limit mediator role

Article Abstract:

Mediation experts have released the nation's first model ethical standards for mediators to praise and criticism, reaching at least a symbolic milestone. The standards are nonbinding and some find them annoyingly vague, which results from the diversity of the mediation field and resultant broad wording. However, the drafters did choose to emphasize facilitating dispute settlement by helping the parties reach their own solution, rather than offering advice on litigation prospects and assessing each side's strengths.

Florida bar's ad restriction constitutional: High Court upholds 30-day ban on lawyer mail solicitation of accident victims

Article Abstract:

The US Supreme Court's ruling upholding FL's ban on direct-mail solicitation of accident victims in the first 30 days indicates a modest retrenchment in the ongoing dispute over regulation of attorney speech. While relatively narrow, however, some observers say the decision may open a way for more states to limit advertising or possibly other speech. The decision split the court, with Justice Sandra Day O'Connor writing the majority opinion and Justice Anthony M Kennedy dissenting sharply.
