The next unionism: structural innovations for a revitalized labor movement

Article Abstract:

The labor movement needs to unite around a single ideology that is inclusive of all groups and classes for the labor movement to be revitalized. The union structure needs to remain a flexible institution open to structural innovation to support or even lead the expansion of unionism. The structures of the CIO and AFL historically are analyzed to see how their innovations influenced the labor movement, such as the move from international to national union structures.

Monopoly unionism under the National Labor Relations Act: an abrogation of common law agency doctrine

Article Abstract:

Common law agency doctrine was the legal principle guiding union-employer agreements until the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) expanded the roles of employee representation and unions. The act's grant of exclusive representation rights to unions resulted in non-union employees being stripped of their right to bargain themselves with employers. NLRA thus circumvented the common law principles previously used by the courts in private sector cases.

The Staggers Act: changes in pay, productivity, and unionism for regional railroads

Article Abstract:

The Staggers Rail Act of 1980 speeded up rail line abandonment and sale and spawned the regional railroad movement. The act has not effected a decline in union membership. Job flexibility has characterized regional railroads, with employees sometimes doing work not in their job descriptions. Wages have not declined significantly. Work force flexibility has resulted in significant cost reductions for regional railroads.
