Life insurers and the "run on the insurer" exposure

Article Abstract:

The failure of several insurance companies in 1991 was not predicted by the industry rating services because the inclusion of accumulation products had not been considered in the risk assessment. More insurance companies are providing accumulation products with short terms, leaving them open to bank-type risks and debilitating mass customer withdrawals. The insurance industry needs to adjust to the philosophy of maintaining some liquidity to product against bank-type risks.

The benefits broker in the marketplace

Article Abstract:

Efficient planning and initial choice of stop-loss insurance policies can increase administrative efficiency and reduce coverage gaps for employers with self-funded group employee benefit plans. Employers shifting to stop-loss policies for medical coverage can reduce funds expended for claims depending on contract terms. Insurance professionals need to assess individual situations and inform clients of the various risks involved.
