The right stuff for building practices: innovative legal applications, groupware show lots of promise

Article Abstract:

Office technology is reaching a stage that permits sophisticated improvements on prior methods rather than incremental enhancements, especially for law practices with thoughtfully developed systems. The most significant trends in 1996 are the emergence of the programming language Java for small Internet mini-applications, and of groupware facilitating seamless communication. Java would permit automated, on-line Shepardizing, for example, while groupware allows people or groups separated in time or space to fully collaborate.

It ain't easy being big: when it comes to automating, small firms have the advantage

Article Abstract:

Budget planning processes and the number of employees limit large law firms in responding as agilely as smaller firms to the improvements in information technology. Budget planning may take place a year or more before a purchase, perhaps obsoleting the purchase item before it reaches the office. Cost may prohibit a firm of 300 employees from purchasing new technology but not inhibit a five employee firm.
