To Africa, with law: a new ABA initiative links U.S. and African law schools

Article Abstract:

The ABA's Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar has started the African Legal Initiative Sister Law School Program (AFLI). This program, funded by a $200,000 grant from the US Information Agency will be modeled on the Sister Law School Program of the ABA Central and Eastern European Law Initiative. The AFLI will target eight East African countries: Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. One of AFLI's activities will be trying to remedy African law schools' shortage of resources.

A starring role: while she enjoys top billing in the legal department at one of Hollywood's hottest entertainment companies, Sally Suchil remains grounded in her Mexican-American roots

Article Abstract:

Sally Suchil brings to her job as general counsel for Spelling Entertainment Group a talent for keeping many balls in the air and a judgment validated as head of Metro-Goldwyn Mayer's legal dept. Recent awards from the California Minority Counsel Program and Women's Law Center recognize her diverse skills and her committment to her Mexican-American roots. A graduate of Santa Clara University School of Law, she worked initially at the SEC.

Counselor at the barre; a Chicago lawyer's pas de deux

Article Abstract:

Matt Glavin, senior litigation associate with Chicago's Ross and Hardies, is also an accomplished amateur ballet dancer. He briefly gave up ballet when he began law school, but has pursued it steadily for the last several years. In 1988 he performed in a small part in an American Ballet Theater production of 'Romeo and Juliet.' Glavin, 31, also has the distinction of having argued cases in every court in Illinois before the age of 27.
