Touched by a centurion; group works to free inmates in tainted capital cases

Article Abstract:

Centurion Ministries is the only US organization devoted to performing post-conviction investigations of prisoners believed to be innocent. Only completely innocent prisoners convicted of serious felonies, under a death or life sentence, indigent and who have exhausted all avenues of appeal are accepted. Centurion receives about 1200 requests each year and can add only five to the active docket.

Judges side with media; despite high jury awards, absence of actual malice dooms cases

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the hurdles erected by courts before plaintiffs in libel suits can win judgments from the media are discussed. Various rulings dealing with the issue show the pervasive influence of New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, the US Supreme Court ruling which required public figures suing the media to prove that the story was both false and that the defendant acted with actual malice.

Different accents

Article Abstract:

The similarities and differences between the US and British legal professions and systems of justice are discussed. Each country's legal system is to some extent experimenting with elements drawn from the other and the increasingly global economy is also drawing the countries together, but the European Union's influence does lead to some differences.
