Unequal partners; it's tough at the top for minority lawyers

Article Abstract:

Minority lawyers have a difficult time with client development duties since they tend not to have the social connections or entree at social settings that white lawyers do. This is the reason a number of minority partners at large Chicago firms have left these firms in the last year. Moreover, white lawyers still feel less comfortable with racial and ethnic minorities than with other whites. The ABA has recognized the problem and started a Conference of Minority Partners in Majority/Corporate Law Firms to address the issue.

A bumpy road to equality; panelists say courts are backpedaling on minority issues

Article Abstract:

The Commission on Opportunities for Minorities in the Profession at the ABA's Aug 1996 Annual Meeting concluded that progress in dealing with racial injustice in the judicial system had been made but that much remained to be done. The meeting also marked the 100th anniversay of the Supreme Court ruling in Plessy v. Ferguson, which made separate-but-equal the national law. The political climate of opposition to affirmative action and perception that it is no longer necessary was seen as a reason for caution.

Paradigms lost; changes in the legal-talent market

Article Abstract:

Law students should note that the job market has changed significantly since the 1980s. With the recession and the effects of over-expansion hitting home, firms are making fewer, and less firm, offers. Students should begin considering the realities of the market upon entering law school, plan their course work accordingly, carefully select summer jobs, consider new cities and alternative markets, and not expect to get more than two offers.
