WWII suits clog courts worldwide; document releases sparked litigation; more on the way

Article Abstract:

The $1.25 bil settlement reached Aug 12, 1998 between Jewish Holocaust survivors and Swiss banks involving the confiscation of wartime assets has ended a much-publicized class action, but the lawsuit and Pres Bill Clinton's probable signing of the Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act will lead to further war-based claims across the world. The bill's purposes is not the creation of private causes of action for Holocaust survivors, but history shows that this may be the result.

U.S. has wounded international justice

Article Abstract:

The US wasted an opportunity to provide leadership on a key international human rights issue by opposing a treaty to create the International Criminal Court, a permanent court for genocide. In addition to the US, only such outlaw nations as Iraq, Libya, China and three others opposed the idea. The main US objection was that it would be improper for the court to exercise jurisdiction over the nationals of countries which do not join the court.
