What did Learmont say? Some 'on the ground' views of the Learmont report

Article Abstract:

The Learmont report on the UK's Parkhurst Prison escape and future escape preventions focused heavily on increased security and neglected the concept of fostering improved prison administration, prisoner relationships, and prisoner morale. Heightened security measures, visitor searches, and a decrease in privacy may lead to more unrest and greater risk of prison revolt. A focus on humane care and a respectful relationship may serve to create a more balanced and ultimately safer environment for all concerned.

A man's world: gender issues in working with male sex offenders in prison

Article Abstract:

Staff and inmate culture reforms are needed to preserve effective working relationships between male and female prison employees, particularly in the management of sex offenders. Although male employees may not participate in the sexist behavior of the prisoners, female employees may feel male employees are contributing to the problem by failing to stop the behavior.
