Why are they picking on us?

Article Abstract:

Low opinions of lawyers are rooted in some prevalent misconceptions. People tend to think that lawyers are hard to deal with personally, dishonest and deserving of criticism for sometimes representing persons or organizations the public dislikes. Dan Quayle's assertion that there are too many lawyers is not based in fact. Lawyers can counter negative perceptions of their profession by letting clients participate more in the legal process and by more public outreach.

No: a pat thesis

Article Abstract:

Most press coverage of Supreme Court decisions tries to be objective, summarizing the facts and the holdings of the majority, concurring and dissenting groups and then attempting to assess the probable impact of the holding. The hyperbole used during coverage of the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings was an exception to the normally balanced coverage.

Three little words; the nature of the judicial process revisited

Article Abstract:

The extent of judicial activism is a matter of increasing public controversy. Perhaps this controversy is fueled by the fact that people turn to the courts when other remedies are exhausted, that courts have the last word. Showing disrespect for the rule of law and the judicial process by emotional polemics is counterproductive.
