Winks and nods open plenty of doors; affirmative action opponents decry race quotas yet are blind to other biases

Article Abstract:

Discriminatory policies persisting show the ironies of the political debate criticizing affirmative action and suggest that how we define community influences our beliefs about merit. Discriminatory admissions policies at public universities persist, and elite private universities recruit alumni children and admit them by special standards. While opponents of affirmative action claim its beneficiaries carry a stigma, the same apparently does not apply to alumni children. For whatever reason, Americans are not troubled by advantages not falling under the heading of affirmative action.
