Wrong balance?

Article Abstract:

Legal and law enforcement officials are right to seek better ways of protecting the public from terrorism and related crimes of violence. Surely they can find a way to balance the often competing demands of preventing such acts while respecting the freedoms and rights of everyone. One good start would be to require judicial approval before an intelligence file could be started on a group or individual, but possession of weapons or explosives combined with advocacy of violence would suffice for approval.

Missile attacks send the wrong message

Article Abstract:

Bringing terrorists to justice is possible and the use of military attacks against terrorists, such as occurred against Osama bin Laden's Afghan base camps and a chemical plant in the Sudan said to be financed by him sends the message that Pres Clinton acted rashly and wanted, perhaps, to create a diversion from the Lewinsky scandal. The apprehension of Ramzi Yousef, the mastermind of the World Trade Center bombing, shows that terrorists can be caught.

Internet gambling: impossible to stop, wrong to outlaw

Article Abstract:

Internet gambling regulatory measures are shortsighted as they interfere with the inalienable rights to the pursuit of happiness. Gambling on the Internet may be uncontrollable as the government would have to control the whole World Wide Web to enforce gambling laws. Moreover, historic evidences show that US founders are engaged in some sort of gambling as part of their right to the pursuit of happiness.
