American reporters killed, harassed around the globe

Article Abstract:

Two American reporters were killed abroad while others were subjected to harassment in 1999 incidents. In Haiti, a 'Dateline NBC news crew investigating alleged atrocities by UN peacekeepers had their equipment stolen at gunpoint. AP reporter Myles Tierney was killed while covering the civil war in Sierra Leone, while San Antonio Express-News reporter Philip True was murdered in a remote part of Mexico. In Gaza, Palestinian police prevented reporters from covering pro-Iraqi demonstrations.

Incidents involving the arrest of reporters and photographers while covering the Elian Gonzalez case in Miami, a protest against the International Monetary Fund in the District of Columbia, and the war in Chechnya are discussed.
