Tyres

Article Abstract:

The UK market for replacement tyres for cars and light commercial vans was estimated at 1.10 billion pounds sterling in 1999, up 47% since 1994. The volume market amounted to 27 million units in 1999, a rise of 27%. The tyre market is characterized by speed rating and size, with some evidence of trading up to higher speed rated tyres, reflecting the higher specifications of original equipment tyres on new cars. The tyre market is truly global and is dominated by leading makers Michelin, Bridgestone, Goodyear and Continental, together having some 65% of all sales by value. The UK tyre market is forecast to reach 1.20 billion pounds sterling by 2003.

Analyzing crashes: how to use computers to get beyond routine coverage

Article Abstract:

News organizations often call the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting (NICAR) since it provides important electronic government aviation records faster than government agencies National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA. NICAR can enhance its services further by using databases that feature airline/airplane data. Databases, however, cannot replace conventional investigative reporting, particularly when finding the right sources or tracing paper trails are needed.

Low Energy Furnaces for the Future

Article Abstract:

Jeffrey Masters and Roger Webb of Midlands Research Station have received the 1983 Royal Society Esso Energy Award for their development of a recuperative burner system. The burner system recovers heat from flue gases in batch furnaces, saving ninety per cent of energy otherwise being lost. Installation costs can be made up in twenty years at this savings. The burner can withstand heat of up to 2000 degrees Centigrade.
