DHS sees surge in research funding

Article Abstract:

The Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) research-and-development (R&D) budget is poised to grow fast in fiscal 2005 with a 15.5 percent increase in the budget request for R&D from fiscal 2004 partially due to the Bush administration's plans to cut the budget deficit by generally limiting domestic spending and increasing research spending in the DHS and the Pentagon. The priority for homeland-defense research will be biodefense and one of the DHS's major biodefense initiatives, Project Bioshield is a procurement program aimed at purchasing vaccines and other anti-disease agents.
