Gag orders on press coverage of juvenile trial invalidated

Article Abstract:

An Arkansas Supreme Court ruling in Arkansas Democrat-Gazette v. Zimmerman determing that the state interest in preserving juvenile defendants' rights did not justify violating the First Amendment is discussed. The court ruled that a juvenile court must revise gag orders which constituted a prior restraint on the media.

Gag order in reform school abuse case upheld

Sioux Falls Argus Leader v. Miller is discussed, a South Dakota Supreme Court case which upheld a gag order on participants in a high-profile case involving manslaughter and child abuse at a state reform school. The court held that undue media coverage would threaten the fairness of the trial.

Review of order penalizing station over negative story denied

Article Abstract:

A Texas Supreme Court decision not to review a trial court decision denying a television station permission to videotape a court case is discussed, and its alleged basis was that the station had a history of broadcasting some stories critical of the judge.
