"God" between their lips: desire between women in Irigaray and Eliot

Article Abstract:

The desire between feminized depictions of women in the works of Luce Irigaray and George Eliot are discussed. This is to contextualize the concept of lesbianism in literature as depicted by both writers. Irigaray achieves this by placing 'God' as the delineation between the 'woman's' body and cultural constructions negligent of 'woman's' pleasure. On the other hand, Eliot shows 'God' as the combination of imprints left by others who have separated people from themselves and from each other.

A modern Odyssey: realism, the masses, and nationalism in George Eliot's 'Felix Holt.'

Article Abstract:

Nationalism, as depicted in George Eliot's 'Felix Holt,' bridges the gap between the past, present and future, and between the prophetic and the narrative. It links the community with the modern state and the self with the community. Political representation is important to the masses and the working class, as represented in the novel. The education of Esther indicates that education of the masses is important if they are to play a national role.

Reading ahead in George Eliot

Article Abstract:

George Eliot, right through her career, discovered her readers daydreaming and engaging in an imagining of their own direction, leading them to create mental pictures that were nowhere present in her books. The argument that George Eliot defined realist fiction as controlling the readers' wayward imagination through authorial discipline is presented.
