"Haunted by places": landscape in three plays by W.B. Yeats

Article Abstract:

Landscapes and the myths associated with them are central to understanding the substance of 'At the Hawk's Well,' 'The Cat and the Moon,' and 'The Dreaming of the Bones' by W.B. Yeats. Yeats used realistic settings he knew well in his plays, yet the public also knew the myths associated with these settings, and both figure prominently in these plays. The unreal world has equal significance with the real world in Yeats's drama, since they coexist and exert mutual influences on dramatic events.

The Protean Prince Hal

Article Abstract:

The character Prince Hal undergoes transformation similar to the myth of Proteus, in William Shakespeare's play 'Henry IV.' Hal tries to understand his identity and finally becomes King Henry V. He undergoes multiple changes to king by prematurely crowning himself by a sleeping Henry IV and by Falstaff. As with Proteus, once Hal has really grasped the kingship he can tell us truth about ourselves.
