High court to decide three records access cases
Article Abstract:
The US Supreme Court will hear three cases during its fall 1999 term regarding access to government records. One involves police records for commercial use, the second a challenge to the Drivers Privacy Protection Act, and the third on whether national security is an exemption to the Freedom of Information Act.

Police videotapes of bookings are public records
Article Abstract:
The Missouri Supreme Court ruled Hemeyer v. KRCG-TV that police videotapes of criminal suspects' bookings were public records and ordered the county seeking their closure to pay legal costs for withholding them.

The US Supreme Court ruled in McClure v. Amelkin that commercial users can be barred from using police records without violation of the First Amendment commercial speech rights.
