IRE members from small news organizations voice needs

Article Abstract:

The Providence national conference in 1996 gathered groups of people from smaller news organizations. They were able to discuss about proposed reforms in theInvestigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) and services they wanted from the IRE. They listed 10 of the top needs for the small news organizations which are regional seminars, IRE journal column, CAR training, databases, speaker lists, sliding-scale fees, fellowship, freelance mentoring, mentoring and internship.

Chiquita lawyer, Enquirer reporter sentenced on voice-mail theft charges

Article Abstract:

Ohio's Court of Common Pleas sentenced a reporter who admitted gaining illegal access to a company's voice-mail system while preparing a story to probation and community service as part of a plea bargain. The company lawyer he named as his source received the same sentence when he pleaded no contest to providing the system codes to the reporter.

News service operators arrested for intercepting paper signals

Article Abstract:

The pending case of US v. Gessman charges three people associated with Breaking News Network , a news "tip" service, with the illegal interception of paper signals. The network, which monitors police and emergency radio scanners to provide clients tips about breaking news stories, denies the violation of any laws.
