Investigating law firms

Article Abstract:

The Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, trade publications, and dockets can provide access to informations on the highly guarded secrets of law firms. Law firms hide their activities and financial status through the privacy of partnerships or professional corporations, and are not required to file statements and annual reports. Hence, it is difficult to know about these firms. However, most firms are listed in the Martindale, which is available in the libraries of law schools. The Martindale, along with other sources, helps to glean information on the partners, clients, and finances of the firms.

Attending to detail, striving for meaning

Article Abstract:

Walt Harrington, staff writer for The Washington Post Magazine since 1984, feels that the success of journalistic stories depends on the narrative style. He says that he uses the literary techniques of foreshadowing, flashback, resolution, and conflict on ordinary incidents to effect an absorbing manner of story-telling. Harrington feels that reporters should attune all their senses to the incident and gather as much information as possible for writing successful stories. Their objective should be to capture the reader's mood, instead of simply telling the truth.
