United Ways represented themselves as a gold standard for charitable organizations but it has become clear that some of its practices had severely strained the agency's credibility within its network of local member charities. The Arizona Daily in Tucson was among one of the first newspapers in the country that provide a close look at the financial sleights of hand employed by a local United Way.
