NBA sues instant score service for copyright infringement

Article Abstract:

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has sued America Online, Motorola and Sports Team Analysis and Tracking Systems, Inc. for false advertising and copyright infringement. The NBA believes that online and pager-based services that provide real-time reporting of the scores of NBA events violate copyright laws. A federal court accepted the copyright allegations and issued an injunction, but that decision has been appealed. America Online has instituted a separate declarative action asking that the NBA's claims be ruled inconsistent with the First Amendment and copyright laws.

Freelance writers lose claim for online database royalties

Article Abstract:

A federal district court ruled in Tasini v. New York Times Co. that freelance writers were not entitled to royalties for the republication of their newspaper and magazine work by online databases or CD-ROMS. The court felt that these were revisions and as such were covered by publishers' copyright interests in the collective works.
