Expeditions to Mars are aimed at understanding its climate and its previous life forms to shed light on what part humans can play in preserving the Earth. The answer lies in Mars' polar regions, the only place that is capable of preserving the molecules that once existed in a once-warm planet.

Water, pink salt and cold dry gullies: halobacteria and the case for life on Mars

Article Abstract:

The surface of Mars is cold and dry, but there is some possibility of the presence of liquid water saturated with salt. The ability of halobacteria to survive harsh Martian conditions is discussed.
